Braves sign rookie phenom Spencer Strider to 6-year, $75 million deal

The ‘stache is here to stay.

Atlanta Braves announced Monday that they have signed rookie pitcher Spencer Strider to a 6-year, $75 million deal. The contract includes a $22 million club option for 2029 season.

Strider and his mustache have taken over Braves country. The rookie phenom finished the regular season with an 11-5 record, 200 strikeouts and a 2.67 ERA.

He became only the third Braves rookie to record 200 strikeouts in a season, the first in the modern baseball era. Only 16 rookie pitchers have accomplished that feat.

After his impressive season, Strider is on the short list for National League Rookie of the Year along with teammate Michael Harris II. The Braves did shut down his season early in September because of an oblique strain.

The Braves have not released their NLDS roster, but general manager Alex Anthopoulos said last week that he expects that Strider will be OK to go. It’s unclear if the Braves will use him in a starting or relief pitching role.

Atlanta signing Strider to a 6-year deal signals again the franchise’s commitment to keeping its core. In this year alone, Anthopoulos has orchestrated long-term deals for Matt Olson, Austin Riley and Michael Harris II.
