Georgia’s Homestead Tax Exemption law is now in effect after the new year.
It was approved overwhelmingly by voters in November.
Dante Handel with the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia said the law will help homeowners by limiting the rate of property tax increases.
Property values have been going up, putting a strain on property owners.
Local governments can choose to opt out.
Several other laws also went into effect at the start of 2025 including one that takes probate judges out of any official role in state elections, and another that restricts the sale of kratom to people over 21.
