City of Mableton holds first transitional city council meeting

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The city of Mableton will hold its first transitional city council meeting Thursday evening.

It’s the first time community members will hear the newly elected mayor and city council discuss how the new and largest city in Cobb County will form.

“Right now and for the last few weeks it has just been an incredible amount of work to get us where we are tonight to have our first meeting, " said Mableton Mayor Michael Owens.

Mableton will take over four services from the county, including city planning, code enforcement, and sanitation.

Owens said his team has two years to fully transition those county services to the city.

Thursday night will be the first of many transitional city council meetings.

“I think we’re the only city probably in modern history at least within metro Atlanta that’s been started without a transition committee. Mableton as a city was not appointed a transition committee from the governor so we are literally starting at ground one,” Owens said.

Owens said the city needs a number of things, including a website, email, and a bank account.

Basic resolutions also have to be passed for the city to move forward.

Owens said the city needs a website to keep community members in the loop, a bank account, and basic resolutions have to be passed.

“It’s going to be key that we go to our tax commissioner and talk about how taxes are going to be allocated or re-allocated from the county to the city moving forward,” Owens said.
