COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Dozens of units were damaged and 50 people were displaced after a raging fire ripped through a Cobb County apartment complex early Tuesday morning.
Cobb County fire said the fire erupted at the Park on Windy Hill Apartments at 2122 Windy Hill Road in Marietta.
More than a dozen crews from Marietta fire and Cobb County fire worked to get the flames under control.
As of 10 a.m., the fire was under control.
Channel 2′s Tom Jones talked to the survivors, who said they had to fight through thick black smoke to escape the fire. Many said they had to leave everything behind.
“I didn’t have my contacts so I had to feel my way. Feel the benches. Like, I closed my eyes to feel the benches so I could walk down,” said D’Angelo Ford.

Ford said they didn’t have time to think, just run.
“We literally, like, just ran outside. But we didn’t have on shoes. Like, these are my neighbors shoes,” Ford said.
Another woman said she lost something that was supposed to help tie her over in these tough times.
“The stimulus check was in there. We hadn’t cashed it yet. We were going to cash it today to pay the rent. But that’s gone,” said Jordica Jordan.
Firefighters are still looking into the cause of the fire but believe the fire started on the third floor.
Thankfully, there were no injuries. The Red Cross is working with the families impacted by the fire.
