Stouffer also spoke with a local pediatrician about what parents need to know.
“Kids should really drink a lot of water. Every hour, kids should be stopping for water or Gatorade drinks,” Dr. Sarah Lazarus said.
At Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Lazarus looks for signs of dehydration and overheating.
“An early sign may be cramping. They may have muscles cramps, such as leg cramps. Kids are feeling really thirsty, that’s their own body is telling them they need to get more fluids in,” she said.

If a child is over-doing it with sports and activity, they should take a break from the heat.
Lazarus said to put some ice packs on their armpits or on their back to cool them them down if they’re overheated.
Lazarus says parents can ask their child, coaches and camp counselors if they’re fitting in those breaks from the heat.
They should take a drink every hour.
