Off-duty Marietta officer jumps into river to rescue drowning woman

MARIETTA, Ga. — An off-duty Marietta police officer’s date night didn’t quite go as planned over the weekend.

Officer Ryan Smith noticed a woman who had fallen out of her raft in the river outside Canoe Restaurant Saturday night. Smith and a restaurant employee jumped into the river to save the woman from drowning.

Smith’s girlfriend was able to capture a short video showing him swimming out to rescue the woman holding tight to her sinking raft.

Luckily, Smith and the restaurant employee were able to bring the woman to safety.

Officials with the Marietta Police Department say this is a reminder that whether the badge is on or off, “those committed to helping others are always ‘on duty.’”
