Cobb residents tired of Dobbins' loudspeaker

Bugle calls coming from Dobbins Air Reserve Base are getting lots of complaints from local residents in Cobb County.

Officials at Dobbins say they installed a new digital on-base loudspeaker system, which neighbors say is much louder than the original system.

The Defense Department ordered Dobbins and other U.S. Military installations update their loudspeaker systems.  And, they're getting enough complaints that on Wednesday they tested the decibel levels of the system with the help of Marietta Code Enforcement.

"We want to just verify we're in compliance with the law," says Captain Patrick Simmons with Dobbins AFB.

But, some who live and work in nearby subdivisions and businesses are not pleased with the new bugle system.

"My husband works nights.  I'm always scared it's going to wake him up," says Jessica Latouche.

Another resident tells Channel 2 Action News, "it's every morning about 8 a.m. and in the afternoon about 4p.m."

Others argue that Dobbins was here first.

"My brother actually every time he hears it, he stands up and salutes," says Latouche and she adds, "It was your choice to live here.  So, go toot your own horn somewhere else."

Dobbins AFB officials say if the tests taken this week show the noise level is too loud, they will make adjustments.  But, they want to remind residents the new system is a federal requirement.
