City of Newnan demolishing some homes that remain damaged a year after tornadoes

NEWNAN, Ga. — Almost one year after tornadoes tore through Newnan and Coweta County, the City of Newnan is deciding what to do about some homes that have yet to be fixed.

Channel 2 investigative reporter Ashli Lincoln attended a meeting of city officials on Tuesday night to determine what should be done with several properties damaged by the tornadoes.

The City says they have spent the last year trying to contact some owners to make the fixes to no avail.

Now, they have voted to demolish some of those homes.

Newnan city officials say their patience has worn thin for the five eyesore properties sprinkled in an area with nicely manicured lawns.

Community members say at least one of those buildings, an apartment building, is not safe.

“I’ve seen people climbing on the building,” Elitta Compton said. “It’s not secure. The doors are left unlocked on both sides.”

City leaders say that apartment building on LaGrange Street has been the biggest issue. Mayor Keith Brady says since the March 26, 2021 tornado, the property owner has been dragging his feet and giving them empty promises for a demolition date.

“The owner of this property has done nothing but delay, delay, delay and make excuses,” Mayor Brady said during the meeting.

During the meeting, a developer said he plans on purchasing the apartment building and is aiming to demolish it in June and rebuild two homes in its place.

“If they would just come in and clean it up,” said Compton, who shares a driveway with the property.

Just two doors down from the apartment building, the city voted to demolish a property abandoned by its owner.

They also issued a 40 day demolition notice for two other properties, and are in contact with another owner on a resolution.

“The city’s trying to help them get back to where those structures are contributing to the fabric of our community,” said Newnan City Manager Cleatus Phillips.
