ATLANTA, GA — The Georgia Public Service Commission approves a rule allowing Georgia Power to charge data centers, and other large load facilities, more than standard customers for electricity.
Commissioner Bubba McDonald tells WSB Radio it applies to any facility that uses more than 100 megawatts, which is equivalent to tens of thousands of homes. The new rule is aimed at reducing the impact the power hungry facilities have on rates for general customers.
McDonald says data center construction has been on the rise more than 50 data centers in Georgia already, with many more already under construction or planned for the state.
