HANCOCK COUNTY, GA — A deadly altercation at the state prison in Hancock County appears to be gang-related.
Joan Heath with the Department of Corrections tells WSB Radio that one prisoner died as a result of a fight Thursday afternoon. A second prisoner also died, but with no visible signs of injury. It is believed to have been medically related.
A third prisoner was sent to the hospital for treatment.
No staff members at the facility were injured.
The incident comes in the midst of the legislative session, and prison conditions are a focal point under the Gold Dome due to reports of severe staffing shortages and an increase in violent prisoner encounters.
