DeKalb County has issued a state of emergency urging residents to shelter in place as the winter weather continues to have an impact on area roadways.
911 operators have received hundreds of calls and more than 100 cars have been stranded on the roadways.
Officials said that though county road crews worked through the night applying over 500 tons of salt, sand, and calcium chloride to treat the roads, the extreme cold has made these efforts ineffective.
"Conditions remain perilous, with many roads, including Rockbridge Road, River Road, and others, severely impacted by ice“, the county said in a statement.
