Dunwoody day care owner charged with murder in death of 4-month-old

DUNWOODY, Ga. — The owner of a Dunwoody day care has been charged with murder after a 4-month-old was found unresponsive at the business.

Dunwoody police said they were called out to the Little Lovey Daycare on Leisure Lane shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The Department of Early Care and Learning said the day care’s owner, Amanda Harris Hickey, 45, had reported that the child was sleeping in a crib for a nap and was later found unresponsive.

When officers arrived at the day care, they immediately began CPR on the infant.

The infant was taken to a nearby hospital where the child was later pronounced dead.

The day after the incident, DECAL said it received a complaint from the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services about a child death at the same location.

On Friday, Police arrested and charged Hickey with felony murder and cruelty to children. Investigators said Hickey owns the day care.

Hickey had her first court appearance on Saturday. A judge said she did not have authority to set bond and the case will be sent to superior court. Hickey’s lawyer requested a preliminary hearing. The date for that hearing has not been set.

“Parents impacted by this situation and wishing to find alternative child care can connect with child care resources at www.qualityrated.org or by calling the toll-free number 1-877-ALL GA KIDS,” DECAL said in a news release.
