(LILBURN, Ga.) — A development proposal in Lilburn could add up to 266 units of luxury apartments, retail/restaurant space, and more to the city’s downtown.
The City of Lilburn partnered with the Lilburn Downtown Development Authority and RangeWater Real Estate to produce a series of documents, detailing a series of developments aimed at revitalizing the city’s downtown area. Included are renderings of the apartment building, renovations of existing buildings, and a 700-car parking deck with a blend of public and private spaces.
Hugh Wilkerson, proprietor of Antiques in Old Town, leases space out of one of the historic buildings off Main Street. He says they’re hopeful about what the development could bring to the area, including new economic opportunities.
“There’s going to be a lot of development that’s coming along that’s going to encourage people to be here,” Wilkerson said.
Opponents of the proposal say that the development could cause issues for legacy residents, create congestion, and sully the historic character of downtown Lilburn. Other criticisms include the nature of the apartments themselves, which would likely be market-rate instead of designated as affordable housing.
The issue is scheduled for discussion at the Lilburn City Council, including public input, tonight at 7:30p.m.
