SPARTA, Ga. — Parts of Georgia were shaken by a small earthquake Monday morning.

The magnitude 2.5 quake was reported 2 kilometers west of Sparta, Georgia in Hancock County around 2:30 a.m.

The earthquake had a depth of just over six miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was too small to cause any damage.

Last week, two quakes shook Menlo, Georgia in the northwest corner of the state. Those quakes measured at magnitudes 2.0 and 2.4.

Georgia still has a number of fault lines. That’s where most earthquakes occur. The Brevard Fault Line, the best-known one, runs from Blue Ridge to Marietta. The Soque River Fault follows the Sogue River in the Northeast, and Salacoa Creek is in Northwest Cherokee County.

The largest earthquake to ever rattle Georgia was a 4.5 near Madison, Georgia in 1914.
