ATLANTA — "They are fishing but fishing with the 'ph'-fishing word, where they're "phishing" for information...including social security numbers, drivers license numbers, things like that."
It's a warning from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources - if you are looking to apply and buy a state fishing or hunting license, do NOT enter any information on the website with the address "georgiafishinglicense.online" - it's a scam.
Mark McKinnon with Georgia DNR's Law Enforcement Division says online users are coming up on the fake site when doing a Google search. "The incorrect site does have the word Georgia Fishing License in it."
"They're really looking for information and trying to steal the identity of people is what we believe," McKinnon says.
"If you do feel like you've been scammed by this website, we'd like for you to call the DNR law enforcement division and investigative unit, and that number is 770-918-6408," says McKinnon.
The scam website has been active for at least the past few days, with DNR getting calls about it from north Georgia and the coast. While other Georgia agencies have had to deal with fake websites in the past, McKinnon says this is the first of its kind that he can remember, that DNR has had to deal with. Officials are working to have it shut down.
McKinnon stresses the only legitimate online site to apply for Georgia fishing and hunting licenses, is gooutdoorsgeorgia.com
