If you find yourself seeing a lot of Dunwoody police cars parked near schools, there's good reason.

"We'll be out there, patrolling the areas and making ourselves very visible," says Dunwoody Police Officer Tim Fecht.

Fecht tells WSB the police will be looking for distracted or speeding drivers who are near school zones where kids are walking to, or from, schools.

The extra patrols are the result of a near miss at a local school.

"It was this past Friday, October 24," says Fecht.  "We had an incident at Chestnut Elementary School, where a driver, possibly distracted by her cell phone, almost struck a child in the crosswalk.

"The crossing guard was able to get the drivers attention, but this is a chronic problem," says Fecht.  That driver sped off.

Fecht says the problem is all over, but has been especially reported at both Chestnut Elementary School and Dunwoody Middle School, which are adjacent.

The added police patrols will be in place for at least the next few days.
