EXCLUSIVE: We take you inside Amazon’s newest delivery center in metro Atlanta

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Amazon is showing the new way it makes sure the things you order online get to you safely and without any risk of COVID-19. The online retailer gave Channel 2′s Steve Gehlbach an exclusive tour of its newest delivery center in metro Atlanta.

Amazon is getting ready for the holiday shopping season plus its annual Prime Day sale set for Oct. 13-14. For the past five years, the day, or days, of deals were held in July to help boost normally slow online shopping period.

But this year, the coronavirus pandemic has led Amazon to change up a lot of its plans.

If you order from Amazon anywhere from College Park to South Fulton to Union City, it probably came through here before it ended up on your doorstep.

The center opened about a month and is Amazon’s 6th metro-area delivery center.

It’s the size of 10 football fields under one roof, it’s humming around 1:30 each morning sorting boxes already packaged at an even bigger fulfillment center.

“I jumped at the opportunity… it’s Amazon,” said Amazon associate Josh Legard.

Legard, one of the 120 employees that will increase by another 100 over the next month, feels he’s making a difference.

“Amazon’s so needed right now, a lot of people ordering things, not going to the stores as much,” Legard said.

Since March, the company has new safety measures that start before anyone enters a facility. It includes temperature screenings via high-tech infrared cameras.

The break rooms are spaced out, as well as work areas. They’ve even hired associates with the new title: Social Distancing Champion.

“All day they’re observing, watching, making sure they’re maintaining that 6 feet distance and doing our processes and procedures we’ve put in place,” said Tiffany Welch, Amazon Sub-Regional Workplace Health and Safety Manager.

Employees seem pleased with all the new safety measures and new culture to deal with the coronavirus.

“I definitely know that I’m going to come to work and leave the same way that I came in,” Legard said.

All those individual delivery trucks pull out of there by around 10:30 each morning.

They’ll be up to full capacity in about month, ready for the big holiday shopping season to start.
