The Atlanta Police Department is investigating the death of a 7-year-old girl that was shot Saturday night.

Channel 2′s Veronica Griffin spoke with the 7-year-old’s dad who said this was the worse thing that could happen to him.

“Worse call ever. The worse that could have really happened. The worse thing that could have happened to me.” Jonathan Phillips said.

A call that his baby girl 7-year-old Ava Phillips was shot and killed Saturday night while visiting her mother.

Atlanta police said the fatal shot rang out inside an apartment home at Camden Vantage Apartments near the 100 block of Jackson Street.

Police believe an argument happened at the gathering and gun fire was exchanged. That is when Ava was struck.

“She was a good girl, man she didn’t deserve this,” Jonathan said.

A large gathering of family and friends showed up Sunday to give love and support to the father of four.

He was extremely close to Ava who he said loved roller skating, among other things.

“She was amazing, man. She liked to smile. She liked to play. She liked to travel with me.” he said. “I took her with me everywhere. She like to call the shots, boss around her brothers you know. She was the baby.”

Jonathan said he was well aware of what’s been a violent month for young kids and teens in the metro Atlanta area, but never expected he would soon experience first hand.

“Senseless violence; the city is going crazy. This is just another incident. It home this time.” Phillips said.
