Federal authorities use social media to help during Hurricane Michael

Believe it or not, Federal Emergency Management Agency officials are all about social media.

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all play a part in recovery efforts from storms like Hurricane Michael.

Lora Goza is the Night Supervisor at the District Four command center in Dekalb County. He tells WSB Radio’ Michelle Wright that workers monitor the various social media sites to help them determine how bad damage is and where to dispatch their crews once they are requested by state and/or local authorities.

“Through social media, you know, we are dependent upon our survivors to out there to keep us informed about what they are seeing,” Goza explains.

He adds that the sites are extremely helpful during the overnight hours where other communication is limited.

“[The sites] keep us informed from their perspective from what they are seeing,” Goza says. “And that can help us determine what areas we need to concentrate our efforts.”
