COLLEGE PARK — Firefighters have finally extinguished a huge fire in College Park that set an apartment building ablaze on Friday morning.

Flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the Langston Apartments on Godby Road not far from the Atlanta airport, just south of Interstate 285.

At least a dozen units were evacuated and at least six apartments suffered damage. Residents stood out in the cold, some of them wrapped in blankets.

College Park Fire Chief Sterling Jones said the blaze worked its way up to the roof of one of the buildings. Flames were also seen coming from the apartment balconies and the upper corners of the building.

“I believe six families were displaced,” Jones said. “But no firefighter injuries, no civilian injuries.”

There were some brief issues with water pressure from the ladder truck.

A firewall protected the other half of the building. The fire department says the fire marshal is working to determine the cause of the fire.

The American Red Cross says it’s helping at least 23 residents.
