GDOT urges drivers to stay off the roads

Icy driving conditions remain in Metro Atlanta as crews work to clear ‘very dangerous’ roads.

Natalie Dale with the Georgia Department of Transportation says they want drivers to stay off the roads.

“We’ll let you know when it’s safe to travel again,” she said.

GDOT says travel south of I-20 and south and east of I-85 ranges from “hazardous” to “very dangerous.”

Gwinnett County Police have responded to more than 1800 calls over the past two days, including nearly 600 traffic accidents.

Two Gwinnett officers sustained minor injuries while responding to weather-related incidents and eight Gwinnett police vehicles have been involved in traffic accidents.

Many drivers have abandoned their cars on the side of Metro Atlanta roads.

Lilburn Police and road crews are working to remove vehicles that were left as motorists tried to get home during Tuesday’s storm.

Senior Police Officer Veronica Arnold says that they have towed at least 10 cars near Camp Creek Road and Mainstreet.

“There’s definitely going to be more,” she said.

DeKalb County issued a state of emergency, telling residents to shelter in place.

First responders in DeKalb have logged at least 200 rescues of stranded motorists.
