Georgia baby burn victim Amahd ‘Bubby’ Black exits medically-induced coma

(AUGUSTA, Ga.) — The nanny cam shows what happened in terrifying detail: the 17-month-old Amahd Black, known to his family as Bubby, poured Vicks VapoRub into a lit candle. It exploded in his face, leaving burns on over 40% of his body.

His dad, Tony Black, rushed him to the hospital, where he was airlifted to a pediatric burn ward in Augusta. He’s made strides in his recovery, but doctors warn of a long road ahead. He’s expected to be in the hospital for the next three months.

His mom, Rochenda Golightly, says that Bubby’s absence is felt strongly in the house. Christmas lights and his stocking are still hung on the mantle, and she says she doesn’t plan on taking them down until Bubby comes home.

A fundraiser is taking donations for the family to support medical and travel expenses.
