JACKSON COUNTY, Ga. — Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of a deputy killed in the line of duty.
Deputy Lena Marshall was shot while responding to a domestic call on Friday night. She died from her injuries Monday.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Marshall and a deputy she was training arrived at a home where a woman, Jessica Worsham, pulled out a gun and shot Marshall.
The other deputy, who has only been with Jackson County for three weeks, returned fire and killed the suspect.
Sheriff Janis Mangum says Marshall was a fantastic Jackson County deputy and a loving mother. She leaves behind three children. The family also shared with the sheriff the significance the day of death has for them.
“Lena lost a child 18 years ago, on the same day she passed,” Mangum said. “She has two daughters and she has a son and then she had Austin. I feel for her children. I just can’t imagine.”

Marshall’s patrol unit sits outside the sheriff’s office in her honor. The sheriff says most of all, she’ll miss her deputy’s servant heart.
“She was a one-time K-9 officer, was a SWAT officer. She wasn’t afraid of anything,” said Mangum.
Mangum says Marshall was the life of the party and loved to make others laugh. However, now those closest to Marshall will need the support of the community that she died protecting.
“I would ask for the community to pray for these children, her family, her friends and our sheriff’s office,” said Mangum.
The Deputy Lena Nicole Marshall Benefit Fund has been set up at the Northeast Georgia Bank, which is located at 1775 Old Pendergrass Road, in Jefferson, Georgia.
“The family of Deputy Marshall, Sheriff Janis Mangum and, we here at the Sheriff’s Office, ask that donations be made to any Northeast Georgia Bank which has locations throughout Northeast Georgia,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
