Georgia DOT halts construction-related lane closures for holiday travelers

ATLANTA, GA — The Georgia Department of Transportation is giving holiday travelers a break on construction-related lane closures, starting Monday.

The temporary halt will last through 10 p.m. on Sunday, January 5th on interstates, major state routes and roadways near key shopping areas, malls and retail districts.

The DOT says drivers will still need to be on alert for maintenance crews that may still be active near highways, and long-term closures may remain in place for safety reasons.

AAA says traffic congestion may be noticeable again today from 1 to 6 p.m., but traffic is expected to be lighter for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
