Georgia House approves bill that bans transgender athletes from girl sports

GA lawmaker says he can’t vote for his own bill after additions were added over transgender athletes The original bill dealt with mental health screenings for student athletes. But now, a state senator tacked on several other unrelated measures, including one barring transgender athletes from playing on sports teams different than their biological gender. ATLANTA — The Georgia House has approved the Riley Gaines Act by a vote of 100 to 64.

The Riley Gaines Act is a bill aimed at prohibiting transgender athletes from girls sports.

Opponents say the legislation is a solution in search of a problem. The legislation now goes to the state senate for a final vote.

Democrats say the bill targets a vulnerable group.
