(GEORGIA) — Georgians broke records Tuesday with more than 309,000 voters casting their ballots in the Georgia Senate runoff. And long lines are expected to continue for the rest of the week.

In Newton County today, there were reports of voters waiting three hours to cast their ballot. In North Fulton, at East Roswell Library, the wait was two hours at one point.

The wait at South Dekalb Mall did not discourage voters.

“You stood in line and once you got inside it was still a little,” said Jasmine Strickland, who waited 45 minutes.

Michael Harper waited in line for an hour. “Definitely worth it,” said Harper.

Voters are undeterred. Kennesaw State political science professor Kerwin Swint says Georgians don’t seem to be growing weary of waiting.

“It would have to be a really long line to turn off very many people; I think people are so eager to vote in this runoff that they’re going stand their ground,” said Swint.

The lines are long, but the window to get your vote in is shorter than ever in this Senate runoff, with just three days left of early voting.

More people will be voting on election day. Many voters understand those dynamics and they aren’t taking a chance.

“The stakes seem higher because this campaign is all about the nationalization of politics,” said Swint. “You got to have your base your people show up in a runoff election or else you don’t stand a chance.”
