Gunman shot by Norcross cop in parking lot of Waffle House

The parking lots of a Norcross Waffle House and an adjacent motel remained cordoned off early Monday as police and the GBI investigated an overnight officer-involved shooting.

Two off-duty police officers working security at the hall called for backup, and as several Norcross police units arrived, a gunman in the parking lot of a nearby Waffle House fired several shots toward the Knights Inn motel next door, hitting one person.

“They could see muzzle flashes shooting in the direction of the Knights Inn,” Norcross police Chief Warren Summers told Channel 2.

An officer returned fire at the person shooting at the motel, hitting the gunman, according to Channel 2.

Police have not released the conditions of the person shot by the officer or the person allegedly shot by that gunman.

Summers said the officer who shot the suspect was placed on routine paid administrative leave.

Norcross police and GBI agents remained on the scene just before 6 a.m.
