The Gwinnett Animal Shelter is bursting at the seams and offering cheap adoptions fees in hopes people will take a pet home.
The shelter has seen a 13 percent increase this month over a year ago, taking in close to 500 dogs since the beginning of June.
“While we do have a few pens available, we’re in-taking close to two-dozen animals a day,” says assistant manager Cindy Wienmann.
She says summer months mean there are more people outside to report stray dogs and recent thunderstorms often lead to dogs jumping the fence and running away.
The shelter is offering reduced fees through the end of the month. Dogs can be adopted for $30 and cats for $10 including all shots, spay/neuter, and microchip.
Laura Warner and her family have had their eye on a puppy and say the reduced fees make adoption even more enticing.
“That’s not a lot for a dog and they’re adorable and they’re wonderful to have at your house,” she tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.
The number of animals at the shelter is up 13 percent over June of 2016.
