GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — After just a few weeks on the job, a Gwinnett County Schools police officer saved a baby’s life.

Channel 2′s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Tony Thomas was on Sugarloaf Parkway, where Officer Zakia Williams said she’s a firm believer that everything happens for a reason.

Williams headed home on Sugarloaf Parkway Tuesday in a fairly undeveloped part of eastern Gwinnett County when she saw a car driving erratically.

“As I’m going home, I see a car swerving in and out,” Williams said. “They have their windows down and they are screaming and beeping their horn.”

The people who were screaming turned out to be the parents of a three-week-old girl who was not breathing.

Heart-pounding body camera video shows Williams jump into action and start CPR on the infant.

“I put her on my knee, because I didn’t want to put her on the ground,” Williams said. "I just started CPR on her. "

Within a few seconds, the baby was breathing again. She was crying by the time paramedics arrived.

The baby’s parents were able to take her to the hospital where she appears to be doing fine.

It’s just Williams' second week on the job, and she’s still in training. She said saving the baby was just part of her job.

“When I signed up for this job, I knew what it entailed,” Williams said. “The main thing was to protect and serve my community. And I just feel like I was fulfilling part of my duty.”

Williams said she’s talked to the baby’s parents twice since everything happened just to make sure everyone is doing OK.
