A homeless man is killed during the cleanup of a homeless encampment in the Sweet Auburn district.
In what a public works spokesperson called a “tragic accident,” a man died during the clearing of material from a homeless encampment on Old Wheat Street near the King Center and Ebeneezer Church. It is not clear exactly how the man died, and a statement from the departments said they routinely clear encampments that pose a risk to public safety, but only after efforts to help provide housing and support services.
A statement from the Hosea Helps organization calls it callous and inhumane, and a failure to value human life.
The Public Works Department official said they are fully cooperating with a police investigation.
