ATLANTA, GA — In a targeted sweep, agents from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency spread out across metro Atlanta Sunday resulting in the arrest of hundreds of people.
According to a statement sent to WSB Radio, a spokesperson says ICE along with their federal partners including the FBI, ATF, and DEA “began conducting enhanced targeted operations in Atlanta to enforce US immigration law and preserve public safety and national security by keeping potentially dangerous criminal aliens out of our communities.” Arrests were reportedly made along Buford Highway, in Chamblee, Brookhaven, Tucker, and Lilburn.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports a 52-year-old Honduran father in the process of seeking political asylum was one of the people arrested at his home.
Chamblee Mayor Brian Mock says his office was informed of ICE activity in the metro area, but specifically the city of Chamblee.
“We did not know they were coming to Chamblee, and we were not asked to participate in any way. Local law enforcement was not involved. They were not on scene.”
He notes that Chamblee is majority minority city and stresses that the vast majority of people are law abiding citizens. Mock says he knows the immigration system needs reform, but says the weekend roundups by immigrations and customs are troubling and now people are scared to go out, even those with no criminal history.
He advises anyone approached by ICE to cooperate, but make sure they have a signed warrant before opening the door.
He says this is just the start of an interesting four years under the Trump administration.
ICE also made targeted arrests in Chicago on Sunday as well.
