WASHINGTON, DC — The US House approved the Laken Riley Act on Tuesday afternoon. The act aims at addressing illegal immigration.

It is named in honor of Laken Riley, the 22-year-old nursing student killed last year in Athens by Jose Ibarra. Ibarra is an undocumented Venezuelan now serving a life sentence.

Georgia Congressman Mike Collins reintroduced the measure, which passed the House last year with bipartisan support, but stalled in the Senate.

The Senate is scheduled to take up the bill on Friday, which would have been Laken’s 23rd birthday.

If passed, it would mandate the detention of illegal immigrants charged with theft or burglary. It would also empower state attorneys general to sue the federal government for harm to citizens due to failure to enforce national immigration policies.
