Man armed with bow and arrow carjacks woman in Atlanta, shot by officer in Marietta, police say

Carjacker used a bow and arrow to steal a car

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — Police say a man armed with a bow and arrow carjacked a woman in Atlanta and was later shot by an officer in Cobb County.

It started around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday when a security guard at the Savannah College of Art and Design in midtown Atlanta said the man first tried to carjack him.

Then, the carjacker fired an arrow into a woman’s windshield on West Peachtree Street to take her car.

It all ended about 90 minutes later with a crash and police shooting in Marietta.

One of the students at SCAD shared an email that alerted him of the situation with Channel 2′s Audrey Washington.

“I was a little concerned at first,” SCAD student Kayla Hensel.

Students said they were both shocked and confused by the bizarre crime that unfolded just steps away from their classrooms.

“Hearing that it was something with a bow and arrow, it was just so irregular,” Bedilu Green said.

According to Atlanta police, a man later identified as Andrew Emory, 29, approached a woman at 1438 Peachtree Street Tuesday morning.

Police say he then fired a compound bow and arrow into her car windshield and forced her out of her car.

“I’m definitely worried. That was just something that I wasn’t expecting,” Green said.

The woman told one of our Channel 2 Action News photographers at the scene that the suspect also threw a fire extinguisher at her. The woman was not hurt.

But police say Emory wasn’t done yet.

They say a man matching Emory’s description then tried to carjack a security guard around the corner at 1600 Peachtree Road.

“I didn’t believe it at first until my friends sent me screengrabs and then I was like, interesting,” Hansel said.

SCAD sent a security alert out to students warning them of what went on.

“The Atlanta Police Department has informed the SCAD Department of University Safety that the suspect involved in the attempted robbery this morning in the parking garage at 1600 Peachtree has been arrested,” the alert said.

“Seeing that security was out in full force, I feel a little better about it,” Hansel said.

A short time later, Emory crashed the car he carjacked in Marietta near the intersection of Atlanta Road and South Marietta Parkway. Following the crash, a Marietta police officer shot Emory after he refused to put down the bow and arrow.

Jessie Brown works a block away.

“When I drove through underneath the underpass, I saw the crashed car,” Brown told Channel 2′s Chris Jose. “You never see anything like that around here.”

“The accident appeared to be severe with injuries. We had passing motorists say, the passing vehicle you see behind me, had gone in a struck the side of the bridge,” said Chuck McPhilamy with the Marietta Police Department.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Emory got out of the passenger’s side door and pointed the bow and arrow at the Cobb County officer.

Marietta police told Jose one of their officers arrived as back up, gave multiple verbal commands to drop the weapon and when Emory didn’t comply, the officer fired a shot.

“The incident itself took roughly 20 minutes before we were able to get him in custody. We were negotiating with him actively outside of the vehicle,” McPhilamy said.

The GBI confirmed that Emory was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Jose has filed an open records request for the 911 calls surrounding the shooting, but a records supervisor said it was a Cobb County officer who called it over the radio. We’re still working to get that.

Marietta police said Tuesday’s incident was the first shooting involving a Marietta police officer since August 2016.
