ATLANTA, GA — Some ads will no longer be allowed on MARTA buses as MARTA is limiting the kinds of ads that can be displayed. The new advertising rule bans advertisements for alcohol, massage parlors, pawn shops, and lawyers.
According to MARTA’s new advertising policy and regulations:
“In order to realize the maximum benefit from the sale of advertising space, the program must be managed in a manner that will procure as much revenue as practicable, while ensuring that the advertising does not discourage the use of the authority’s transit system, does not diminish the authority’s reputation in the community it serves or the good will of its patrons, and is consistent with the authority’s principal purpose of providing safe and efficient public transportation.”
Marta could lose about $3.5 million dollars a year in ad revenue, but hopes to make it up with other ads. Marta says there’s a national trend by transit agencies to move away from certain types of advertising and in some cases any ads at all on buses.
MARTA says that it will focus on commercial advertising, transit advocacy and community, and health and education campaigns.
