Metro Atlanta police chief has equipment stolen from cruiser

(COVINGON, Ga.) — The Rockdale-Newton Citizen reports that the Covington chief of police Stacey Cotton lost guns, ammunition, and other items after they were stolen from his department-issued cruiser.

On April 24, Cotton parked his Chevy Tahoe in his driveway, rushing to catch a flight to a training conference. He says he suspects that he didn’t confirm that the doors were closed and locked in his haste.

Two days later, a pedestrian noticed a small black bag tossed on the side of Elks Club Road, and stopped to investigate. The chief’s badge was found inside, one of a few items that were recovered. Still missing are Chief Cotton’s two handguns and ammunition.

In total, about $600 of equipment was stolen, the Citizen reports.
