The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) is investigating a crash that left a mother and her two children dead.

At 2 p.m. on Sunday, BCSO said that a black Chevrolet SUV was going southbound on I-475 just past the Thomaston Road bridge when it went off the roadway and hit a tree.

After hitting the tree, the SUV caught on fire.

Deputies said there were three people in the SUV and all three were pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Luanne Stone. WGXA-TV in Macon reported the bodies were burned so badly that at first, they were not identifiable.

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones told WGXA Monday morning that he was ultimately able to identify the victims as 41-year-old Karen Gregory, 19-year-old Kyron Gregory and 10-year-old Yahvi Gregory.

Jones said the vehicle was so badly burnt that investigators had to use a VIN number to identify it. The car is registered in Jacksonville, Florida, according to WGXA.

Jones said the family was driving back to Jacksonville from Locust Grove after looking at a home they were interested in moving in to, WGXA reported.

No one else was injured during the collision.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the wreck.
