Georgia police officer shot in neck, man killed in shooting in Atlanta

ATLANTA — A Georgia police officer is hospitalized and a man is dead after a shooting Monday night in downtown Atlanta Monday night.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the shooting.

According to authorities, an off-duty Molena, Georgia, reserve police officer was working with ATL Plus, a parking enforcement company in the 300 block of Luckie Street. At around 9:50 p.m., the GBI said he was sitting in his patrol car when he was approached by a man who fired a gun at the officer, hitting him in the neck. The officer fired back, hitting the man, who later died, the GBI said.

The officer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Channel 2 Action News said a third person, a woman, had been slightly injured in the shooting.

Agents at the scene found the man who died in possession of a firearm, the GBI said.

The identity of the man who was killed has not been released.

This is the 80th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2021.
