New film on 2017 Cobb Co. bank holdup shines light on veterans’ mental health

It was the Wells Fargo bank branch off Windy Hill Road in Cobb County that Brian-Brown Easley decided to walk into July 7, 2017. For the 33-year-old Marine Corps veteran, it would be where his life would end hours later.

Easley passed a note to the teller that he had a bomb, before taking two hostages. Investigators say Easley had complained that Veterans Affairs had lost his disability check and was homeless.

The ordeal included Easley’s call to the newsroom of Channel 2 Action News and an hour-long conversation with an assignment editor. The standoff would end with a fatal shot from a SWAT officer.

In the new film “Breaking,” just out in theatres August 26, that day is dramatized on the big screen. The movie features John Boyega as Easley, alongside a cast including Connie Britton, Nicole Beharie, Jeffrey Donovan, and others. “Breaking” won a special jury award for its ensemble cast at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
