ROSWELL, GA — A suspect is dead and a SWAT officer is recovering after being shot twice in the chest after being deployed to a home in Roswell to serve a search warrant. Although the officer’s ballistic vest absorbed most of the impact, the officer did sustain injuries from shrapnel.
He is expected to make a full recovery.
On Friday afternoon, Roswell Police Detectives along with members of the North Fulton SWAT team, went to a home in the 500 block of Ansley Drive to serve search and arrest warrants.
Upon arrival, Roswell Detectives identified the male suspect from a criminal investigation on a December 31 incident where a male suspect fired a handgun when asked to leave a party.
Detectives secured warrants for his arrest for multiple charges including reckless conduct, discharge of firearms on the property of another, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The suspect was known and had an extensive and violent criminal history including multiple weapons offenses, prompting North Fulton SWAT to lead the operation to apprehend the suspect.
According to Police Chief James Conroy, the man was armed with a handgun and ran out of the back of the house. He turned around and began shooting at the officers, hitting one. The injured SWAT officer fired back, hitting and killing him.
“Our SWAT team are well trained, work together, and unfortunately sometimes deadly force is required.”
The GBI has been called in to help with the investigation.
