Georgia’s Lieutenant Governor wants to make Georgia the Technology Capitol of the East Coast.

During the Georgia Chamber’s annual Eggs and Issues Breakfast at the Georgia World Congress Center, Geoff Duncan announced the creation of the Georgia Innovates Task Force.

“I believe the entire world is going to watch what we’re doing and be jealous that they don’t live in Georgia,” he says.

The task force will make recommendations on potential legislative, administrative and other actions in areas of public innovation, education and training, business start-ups and rural initiatives.

“A working group to help champion, to help consult, to help guide us around public policy and things we can do in rural areas,” says Duncan.

Former U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, fresh off his duties in Washington D.C., will co-chair the task force along with former Georgia Tech President G.P. “Bud” Peterson.

Other members will include Raphael Bostick, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta; Paul Bowers, chairman, president and CEO of Georgia Power, and other business leaders from the technology industry.

Chris Clark, president of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, applauded the news saying Georgia still has a lot of work to do on the technology front.

“Georgia ranks 32nd in patent development; we rank 32nd in research and development; we’re 27th in STEM. We’ve got to fix all those are statics if we’re going to be a leader for technology,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

The first meeting of the task force is scheduled for later this month.
