‘Said he had the best mom ever:’ Family says no sign of danger before 6-year-old stabbed to death

Police now say the mother of a six-year-old found stabbed to death in a burning apartment set the fire as she was facing eviction.

Monday in Peachtree Corners, Jayveon Pruitt is being remembered by his grandmother as a young boy with a lot of love in his life.

“He even said he had the best mom ever,” Chastidy Brown told Johnson. “He was just so precious. He loved his mom. He loved his dad.”

Brown is the child’s paternal grandmother and lives in Mississippi. She said the murder, and the arrest of the child’s mother, 23-year-old Azaria Burton, is confusing.

“That’s what’s hurting the most is because everything was so normal,” Brown said. “Because we just talked to him Wednesday.”

Police said Burton stabbed her son to death and then lit their Peachtree Corners apartment on fire last Thursday. She’s now facing malice murder and arson changes.
