ATLANTA, GA — The schedule for the celebration of life, legacy, and spirit services for former Georgia state senator and community activist Vincent Fort have been released by the office of Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and the Atlanta City Council.
Senator Vincent Fort died on December 22nd at the age of 68 from complications with cancer. He was a decorated state senator in Georgia serving the 39th district for nearly 20 years.
His body will Lie in State at Atlanta City Hall for public viewing starting Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A family service and Masonic Last Rites will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Willie A. Watkins Funeral Home West End Chapel. The final event held on Saturday will be a Celebration of Life and memorial service takes place at 1 p.m. at the Lindsay Street Baptist Church.
Atlanta Council Member Michael Julian Bond worked with Fort on many occasions. He says Fort was known for his advocacy for social justice and economic equality and will be missed. “He leaves a rich legacy and a prime example to those who want to serve the public.”
Bond says Fort’s funeral will also be livestreamed.
He will be remembered on the same weekend as former President Jimmy Carter who will be Lying in State just across the street at the Georgia State Capitol.
