ATLANTA, GA — Signs are popping up around metro Atlanta about shortages of eggs or prices being higher due to the bird flu outbreak.

At a restaurant off Nesbit Ferry in Johns Creek, there’s a sign on the door that reads due to “soaring " cost of eggs, there will be a extra charge for egg entries.

Mike Giles, president of the Georgia Poultry Federation, says the outbreak has impacted supply and demand and the industry overall. Since October, there have been about 33 million hens lost due to bird flu. He says eggs come in and go out of Georgia, but it will be hard to predict when prices might come back down.

Georgia’s poultry sector accounts for an overall annual economic impact of around $40 billion.

Testing is ongoing as poultry farmers are on high alert for the highly contagious avian influenza.
