Residents across Cobb county are dealing with something smelly coming from their tap. In a statement, the Cobb County Water System is aware that some of our customers have water with a musty or earthy taste and/or smell.

Senior Project Manager Kathy Nguyen says the water is safe to drink, the odor and odd taste are due to an increase of geosmin and MIB (2-Methyl-iso-Borneol) in Allatoona Lake.

Nguyen explains the increase of those two elements comes when a trio of things all come together to form the perfect environment. "One, how hot it has been has really raised the water temperature, how dry it has been, and also the fact the Army Corps of Engineers draw down is underway."

Nguyen says this isn't your average water issue. "Normally in a situation like this, you know, you hear a water system say flush at the tap and you'll see an improvement. This is not the case with this particular issue."

"We are just really sorry about the inconvenience this is." said Nguyen.

Unfortunately, the issue will probably not resolve completely until we receive consistent rainfall. We apologize for the inconvenience to affected customers. We are working closely with Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority on this issue.

The Cobb Water System has about 175,000 account, serving about 700,00 citizens. "About 40% of our service area is normally receiving the Allatoona water," said Nguyen, "We're down to serving it to about 23% of that population right now."
