Transgender athletics is focus of first Georgia bill

Georgia State Capitol Next month, a state healthcare commission will begin considering options including if the governor’s Pathways program is the best way to achieve that goal. (WSBTV.com News Staff)

The first bill proposed in one body of the Georgia Legislature is directed at transgender athletes in sports.

Supporters say the legislation is key to ensuring a level playing field in school sports. The bill would require transgender athletes in K-12 schools as well as the state’s universities to compete against their biological sex.

Opponents say it is a solution in search of a problem.

“Once again we find the majority party wasting our time attacking vulnerable youth when we could be doing really important work,” said Democratic State Senator Kim Jackson.

The bill would also require separate restrooms and changing areas for athletic events.
