BROOKHAVEN, GA — A woman accused of murdering her 9-year-old son and burying him in the backyard of her Detroit home has been arrested in Cobb County.

Wayne County, Michigan Prosecutor Kym Worthy in Michigan says police found the child’s body after receiving a call from a landlord who said he saw something suspicious. Authorities found a shallow grave behind a rental home with a human foot sticking out of the ground.

Worthy identifies the child as Zemar King the 3rd. His mother, 41-year-old Brandee Pierce, fled south after the alleged crime.

Authorities say she was recently arrested at Cumberland Mall in Cobb County on drug charges.

She’ll be extradited back to Michigan. Police say Pierce smothered the boy to death before disposing of the body.

“The cause of death according to the Medical Examiner was smothering and neck compression,” Worthy said at a news conference. “It is alleged she purchased a shovel, she bound him by tying his hands and feet together and dug a hole in the back of the house on Woodingham where she had been living for a short time.”

In Georgia, she is charged with first-degree cruelty to children and possession of a controlled substance and theft.

She faces a slew of charges in Michigan in addition to the charges in Georgia: first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, first-degree child abuse, tampering with evidence, and concealing the death of an individual.

Her other child, the 3-year-old, is now in foster care in Brookhaven, Georgia.

“I have been a prosecutor for a long time, and I often say that I have seen it all. The horrors of this child abuse case defy that. The alleged actions of this defendant are among the most callous I have seen and hope never to see again,” Worthy said.
