Zoo Atlanta announces the birth of a western lowland gorilla. The parents are Shalia and and first time father, Willie B. Jr.
The newborn arrives two weeks earlier than expected, and the sex is not yet known.
The infant appears to be receiving proper care from Shalia and is strong and healthy.
This marks the 25th gorilla born at Zoo Atlanta since 1988.
Willie B Jr. has four sisters, Kudzoo, Olympia, Sukari, and Lulu. They all reside at Zoo Atlanta, save for Olympia, and have children of their own.
The uniquely Atlanta based troop is contributing to the legacy of educating the public about the critically endangered species.
The western lowland gorilla has seen drastic population decreases due to poaching, emerging diseases, habitat loss, and illegal hunting for the bushmeat trade. Over a 25-year period, these factors reduced the wild populations by 60% and even 90% in parts of western Africa where they reside.
Zoo attendees can see Shalia and her baby at the Gorilla Habitat 4 in The Ford African Rain Forest.
