Atlantan and Home Depot founder Bernie Marcus is spearheading an effort to create a national learning network to help veterans with brain injuries and PTSD.
There have been an estimated 300,000 traumatic brain injuries in the military since 2001.
Beginning in 2007, VA implemented mandatory TBI screening for all Veterans accessing care in VA that served in combat operations and separated from active duty service after September 11, 2001.
Symptoms can appear immediately or weeks to months following the injury. Many vets are left untreated and do not get the help they need.
Marcus and his foundation have donated $38 million dollars to create a Marcus Institute for Brain Health just outside of Denver, Colorado. It will serve as the main hub where information from other programs around the nation will be collected to come up with a gold standard for treatment and care for vets with brain injuries.
Information will be gathered from among other places, Emory and the Shepard Center in Atlanta.
The Marcus Foundation hopes the institute will be a model for similar programs elsewhere. Marcus hopes more philanthropists will join the cause and said he hoped to have one in every community.
