MONROE COUNTY, Fla. — Visitors and residents to the Florida Keys will be required to wear face masks indoors.

Monroe County Commissioners approved the requirement Thursday for customers and employees to wear facial coverings at businesses and other public places, WPTV reported.

Restaurant and bar customers can remove their masks once they are seated. People in gyms can remove their masks while exercising as long as there is 6 feet of distance between members.

There is no jail time, but violators could face a $500 fine.

The ordinance is in place through June 2021, but county officials will revisit the requirement quarterly, WTVT reported.

The Florida Keys reopened June 1 after closing to visitors for more than two months in an effort to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

There are 85,918 confirmed cases and 3,060 deaths from the coronavirus in Florida, according to The New York Times.
