Atlanta's Cyclorama is closing its doors in Grant Park and moving to a new facility being built at the Atlanta History Center. Gordon Davis, the History Center’s senior military historian, says the sweeping panorama of the battle fought on July 22, 1864, takes the viewer on a trip through history.

“It was painted originally to celebrate Northern victory for Northern audiences, it was painted in Milwaukee. Then it came South and became the same thing for white Southern audiences.”

The Cyclorama painting, which is 42 feet tall and 358 feet in circumference, is said to be the largest painting in the world.

“This painting has a lot of history behind it, has a lot of stories behind it,” said Davis. “And, we want to tell all those stories.”

The Texas Locomotive and other Civil War artifacts are also being relocated to the new facility at the Atlanta History Center which is expected to open in 2017.
